A KOHLER Santa Rosa Toilet (Model K-3810-0) Review
KOHLER Santa Rosa Toilet
Like all best rated toilets, regardless of how good the reviews seemed to be, there are flaws no matter how subtle they are. This KOHLER Santa Rosa toilet is no exception. Let’s examine the imperfection as you explore further down. For now, here’s the review proper.
Introducing The KOHLER Santa Rosa Toilet, Model K-3810-0
Compact in size, the KOHLER K-3810-0 Santa Rosa toilet is perfect for those who want to fit in an elongated toilet into a small space. It’s one-piece design offers a distinct high-end look and without tank seam it’s extremely easy to clean. Best of all it’s loaded with power.
Rather than a standard flapper valve, the KOHLER Santa Rosa toilet features a patented flush engine, the AquaPiston flushing system. There’s no flapper which means there is no leaks and no problems, it’s just full out power. And it has a large water surface area which greatly reduces bowl streaking and skid marks. Plus, this toilet provides 50% more rinse than previous KOHLER models. Giving you a cleaner bowl after every flush.
Powerful flush and water saving, this WaterSense certified toilet features a 1.28 gallon per flush. Which let you save about 20% on water consumption compared to a 1.6 gallon toilet, and more than 60% against your old 3.5 gallon toilet. It definitely meets the California Energy Commission’s requirement, which means there’s no shipping restriction to the state of California. Another great feature of the Santa Rosa toilet is its comfort height seating. KOHLER comfort height toilets are about the height of the standard chair, making it so much easier to sit down and get up.
This KOHLER K-3810-0 Santa Rosa toilet comes with a KOHLER slow close and quick release toilet seat. The seat can be detached quickly for easy cleaning and are well designed for looks and functions. (Seat model: KOHLER K-4774-0 Brevia)
Features & Specifications Overview
Class Five Flushing Power With The AquaPiston Canister
The way KOHLER designed the flushing mechanism of the AquaPiston shows considerable R&D effort to break away from the conventional flapper valve design. The AquaPiston canister is designed to enhance the water flow rate. The difference is in the water volume and speed that exit the tank. Unlike the flapper valve, the AquaPiston system is able to ensure the water volume stay consistent from the moment the valve opens till it closes. This is achieved with a 360 degrees valve opening to allow no-blockage free flowing water into the bowl. This undoubtedly increases the water volume leading to a much higher water flow rate.
Water flow rate is the Quantity of Water moving through a pipe or channel within a given time period (usually a minute or hour).
And to further enhance the flow rate, an extended fitting serves to streamline the water flow and control the volume to provide a more powerful jetted gush into the bowl. Think of a jet spray, when water is ‘pushed’ through a narrow tube, the flow rate increases at the outgoing end. Based on the same principle, a short 3:2 ratio sleeve fitting consolidate the water flow, harnessing the power of gravity to flush water into the bowl at higher velocity. The resulting flush has an excellent ‘scrubbing effect’ that removes the stickiest waste on the bowl surface.
Here’s a video of Ed Del Grande, Master Plumber, explaining how the AquaPiston is better than the flapper valve.
Comfort Height – Is it Right For You?
Not to be confused with the overall height of a toilet which measures from the floor to the top of the toilet tank. Comfort height refers to the seating height of toilets of anything from 17″ to 19″, which is the distance from the floor to the top of the toilet seat.
This KOHLER Santa Rosa Toilet has a seating height of 18.44″, almost an inch higher than most competing models. But that does not mean the higher the better. It depends largely on your preference and needs. Honestly, 2 inches don’t make a world of difference for the young and healthy, you either love or hate it. But for a person with leg injury or an elderly, an inch short could mean inconvenience, discomfort or even pain.
If you are a tall person (above 5 ft 10 inches) you are likely to find this comfort height toilet rather comfortable to use, for sure. Most users who bought this KOHLER Santa Rosa toilet have only good things to say about the seating height.
The average American men height is 1.77 m, or 69.7 inches, while the average American women height is 1.64 m or 64.6 inches.
Can You Wrestle This 100-Pounder?
All plumbers love two-piece exposed trapway toilets. That’s because they only need to deal with the heaviest part of the toilet at two third of the total weight. But for this KOHLER Santa Rosa toilet, you can’t split the weight. It’s a full 103 lbs, one-piece take it or leave it. That’s quite a challenge to do the installation alone.
If you planned on installing this fat boy yourself, make sure you get help especially in a small bathroom where space is tight. Safety first always. If you are hiring a plumber, tell him before hand it’s a one-piece toilet and its weight. Plumbers hate surprises, they have a love-hate relationship with one-piece toilets. Hate for an obvious reason and love is because once the toilet is grounded, the installation is 90% done. The rest are just a walk in the park for them.
Can you handle this KOHLER Santa Rosa Toilet yourself, alone? Actually it wasn’t that hard. Here’s Craig from Maple Ridge Plumber to show you how to install this KOHLER Santa Rosa Toilet alone.
The Downside Of KOHLER 3810-0 Santa Rosa ToiletLet’s begin with the easy part, the exposed trapway. If you are a clean freak, you will love the skirted concealed trapway design which makes dirt easy to spot and super easy to clean. Unfortunately with the exposed trapway of this KOHLER Santa Rosa toilet, dirt always accumulates in the crevices. And the parts that are facing away from your view, you need to touch it to know there’s dirt accumulated. Cleaning the area around the trapway bends may need little nimble fingers and you have a lot more areas to clean. Try cleaning with screaming kids in the background or after a lousy day. You get the point.
The trapway bend is a little tight, according to Terry of terrylove.com. Tight bend can cause clogs, especially on heavy loads. If the toilet is using the conventional flapper valve, high chance it’s going to clog even with a 3.25″ flush valve. So does the Santa Rosa toilet clogs often? According to user reviews, their experience speaks otherwise. The AquaPiston flushing system works like it should, with enough power to flush through the tight bend. Looks like it when you have a MaP rating of 1000 and most users are not complaining. Let’s place this KOHLER Santa Rosa Toilet side by side the American Standard 2403.128 Cadet 3 Flowise Toilet and see how the trapways compare.
The Dark Side Of AquaPiston
While the AquaPiston is well designed for maximum flushing power, it is also meant to replace the age old flapper valve system and eliminate leaks. If you came across some reviews that mentioned the AquaPiston canister has a leaking problem, it’s probably from 2012 to 2014. Back then the part that’s problematic was 1151540, the Canister Valve Assembly. It has since been replaced by 1216612. And since the greater part of 2015, there are no complaints heard about leaking issue of the canister.
If you have just ordered this KOHLER Santa Rosa toilet, you should be getting the 1216612 canister. But please check the product to be sure, especially if you bought it from a local plumber who may still be carrying some older stock. In case you encounter a defective AquaPiston canister (touch wood), here’s how one user got her replacement from KOHLER with a happy ending.

This KOHLER Santa Rosa Toilet score a decent 4.6 stars rating overall, at the time this review was written. Out of which about 80% are written by Verified Purchase users. A good number of users have given a 5 stars rating, mostly impressed by the high efficient Class Five Flushing with only 1.28 gallons of water. The next most praised feature is the chair height seating and the elegant one-piece design.
The 4-star reviewers filled up a little over 10% of the total reviews. Their reviews echoed those 5 stars raters with about half of them offered a brief one liner review. A few expressed a little disappointment with the high seat and how the toilet seat edge dig into their thigh.
The 3 stars reviews are only a handful and mostly negative. Complaints range from poor seat quality, tank leakage (see above), uncomfortable seating and loud flushing. Most of the reviewers in this group are Verified Purchase users.
The 1 and 2 stars reviews nominate the AquaPiston leakage issue and flushing efficiency.
One particular issue was brought up by a 2-stars reviewer about a 1/4″ nub near the back bottom of the tank. That causes the 12″ KOHLER Santa Rosa toilet to not fit properly despite having a 1/2″ clearance from the wall. However, please note that the user had padded the wall with porcelain tiles of about 3/8″ thick. This inevitably changes the rough-in distance to less than 11.5″. To be precise, that’s a 5/8″ (1/4″ + 3/8″) short in the rough-in, which result in more than the 1/2″ allowance. Without the porcelain tiles or the nub, it would otherwise be a good fit. So make sure you have a clear 12″ rough-in or at least 11.75″ to make a proper fit.
According to the user, the nub issue was brought to KOHLER’s attention. And KOHLER’s explanation was that the nub was created during its molding injection process. It was not known however, if the the nub issue was being resolved. If you have an issue with the 1/2″ clearance, you may want to grind off the nub with a grinding stone. But that’s not proper. KOHLER should take care of this unnecessary nub in the first place. Here’s the full review.
Lesson learned: Never mess with Rough-in.
